There is plentiful bird life around homes, gardens, orchards, meadows and other habitats disturbed by human activities. The hooded warbler will cling to window screens to feast on insects as day breaks. The Rufous-tailed Hummingbird will be the most common visitor to feeders and they will fight off all comers although other species like the Green-breasted Mango and Ruby-throated Hummingbird will make occasional apearances.
Citrus orchards can be full of woodpeckers (Black-cheeked, Golden-fronted, Lineated, Pale-billed and the rarer Chestnut-colored Woodpecker).
Birds that have nested around The Lodge at Big Falls during 2007 include Passerini's Tanager, the Blue-gray Tanager, Yellow-winged Tanager, Clay-colored robin, Kiskadee, Social flycatcher, Yellow-bellied elaenia, Black and white Owl, Gray Hawk, Bare-throated Tiger Heron and all the various Seed Eaters.
The Black-crested Coquette is a regular visitor to the Lodge's grounds during the summer months when the blossoms on a few tree species attract them.
Our most exciting (although technically unconfirmed) was the Blue-throated Goldentail that Marta the owner of the Lodge spotted just in front of the main lodge. This makes it just the third sighting of this bird in Belize.
