As most of the winter residents fly north to breed our year round residents begin a flurry of courting and nesting activity lasting from mid-April through mid-June. In May 2008 sixteen different species of bird were nesting within 100 feet of the lodge.
These included the Tropical Kingbird which builds anest of loose dry vines in the angle of palm leaves. The Blue-Gray Tanager has also used the same small Christmas Palm this year although in the past it has nested much higher in the boughs of the Mayflower tree, tabebuia pentaphylla, by the pool.
Passerini's Tanager nests fairly low down building a tightly woven nest in shrubs like the croton family (see below) and limonaria hedges.
Other nesting species were the Yellow-winged Tanager, Ruddy Ground Dove, Yellow-throated Euphonia, Yellow-olive Flycatcher, Common Tody Flycatcher, Grayish Saltator, Rufous-tailed Hummingbird, White-bellied Emerald, White-collared Seedeater,
Red-eyed Vireo, a migrant from the southern hemisphere, Great Kiskadee, Social flycatcher and Clay-colored Robin.
