18 miles (29 kilometres) north of Big Falls the broadleaf vegetation gives way to savanna grasslands similar to the terrain of the Moutain Pine Ridge in Cayo. Pines, oaks and saw palmetto are the dominant species and we find distinctive bird species here also.
The swallow-tailed kite is more likely to be found here than in other habitats and the yellow-headed parrot is the most common parrot species. Other birds to be found in these savannas include Canivet's Emerald, the Ladder-backed Woodpecker and Acorn Woodpecker, Streak-headed Woodcreeper, Sedge Wren, Hepatic Tanager, Rusty Sparrow, Eastern Meadowlark and Grace's Warbler. The Savannah Sparrow keeps a very low profile and when surprised will lurk in the low grasses and refuse to be flushed out.
As the early morning sun rises over the savanna we have witnessed flocks of Indigo Bunting feeding unconcerned on the seeds from the low grasses and sedges. A great way to start your day's birding expedition.
